Best Scope for AR 15 - Rifle Scope
In this guide, let’s check out the 5 Best Scope For AR 15 based on reticle designs, eye relief, magnification, low light performance and price.
We have tested many scopes on different rifles to shoot targets up to 25 – 600+ yards.
I’ve personally hand-tested the more than 15 AR 15 sights for finding the best ar15 scopes and Best AR 15 optics for you.
Choosing an AR-15 scope requires careful consideration of several factors to ensure it meets your shooting needs and preferences. Here are some key factors to consider when selecting an AR-15 scope:
1. Intended Use: Determine the primary purpose of your AR-15 rifle. Are you using it for close-quarters shooting, tactical applications, hunting, or precision long-range shooting? Different shooting disciplines require different types of scopes.
2. Magnification Range: Consider the shooting distances you’ll be engaging targets at. If you’ll be shooting at close to moderate ranges, a low to medium magnification scope (1-4x, 1-6x) may be suitable. For longer range shooting, you may need a scope with higher magnification (4-12x, 5-25x). Choose a magnification range that aligns with your shooting needs.
3. Reticle Type: Decide on the reticle type that suits your shooting style. Common reticle types include duplex, mil-dot, BDC (Bullet Drop Compensation), and illuminated reticles. Each reticle type offers different features and benefits, such as holdover points, ranging capabilities, and visibility in low-light conditions.
4. Optics Quality: Look for scopes with high-quality optics that provide clear, sharp, and bright images. Consider factors like lens coatings, glass quality, light transmission, and color accuracy. Optics quality significantly impacts your ability to identify targets and make precise shots.
5. Durability and Construction: AR-15 rifles can experience recoil and be subjected to harsh conditions, so choose a scope that is built to withstand these demands. Look for scopes with durable construction, shockproof and waterproof capabilities, and reliable performance in various environmental conditions.
6. Adjustments and Turrets: Check the turrets and adjustment mechanisms of the scope. Look for scopes with tactile and audible clicks, precise tracking, and repeatable adjustments. Consider whether you prefer MIL or MOA adjustments, and if features like zero-stop or locking turrets are important to you.
7. Eye Relief and Eye Box: Consider the eye relief and eye box of the scope, particularly if you wear glasses or prefer shooting with both eyes open. A scope with generous eye relief and forgiving eye box allows for comfortable and flexible shooting positions.
8. Budget: Determine your budget range and explore scopes within that range. There are scopes available at various price points, so find a balance between your budget and the features and performance you require.
9. Reviews and Recommendations: Read reviews, watch videos, and seek recommendations from experienced shooters, professionals, or trusted sources. Hearing about real-world experiences with different scopes can provide valuable insights and help inform your decision.
10. Warranty and Customer Support: Consider the warranty and customer support offered by the scope manufacturer. A solid warranty and reliable customer support can provide peace of mind and assistance if you encounter any issues with the scope.
By considering these factors and understanding your shooting requirements, you can choose an AR-15 scope that aligns with your needs, enhances your shooting experience, and helps you achieve your shooting goals.
AR-15 SHOOTING DISTANCES
The shooting distances for an AR-15 rifle can vary depending on various factors such as the ammunition used, barrel length, shooter’s skill level, and the specific shooting discipline. Here are some general shooting distances associated with AR-15 rifles:
1. Close Quarters: AR-15 rifles are often used for close-quarters shooting, such as home defense or tactical applications. In these scenarios, engagements typically occur within 25 yards (23 meters) or less. A low magnification optic or red dot sight is commonly used for quick target acquisition and rapid engagements.
2. Short to Medium Range: AR-15 rifles are also popular for shooting at short to medium ranges, such as in competitive shooting or hunting situations. Shooting distances in this range typically vary from 100 to 300 yards (91 to 274 meters). Scopes with a magnification range of 1-4x, 1-6x, or 3-9x are commonly used to provide flexibility and enable precise aiming at varying distances.
3. Medium to Long Range: With the right setup and skilled marksmanship, AR-15 rifles can be effective at longer ranges. Shooting distances in the medium to long range category can range from 300 to 600 yards (274 to 548 meters) or even farther. For such distances, scopes with higher magnification (e.g., 4-12x, 5-25x) and potentially additional features like bullet-drop compensating (BDC) reticles or target turrets are often used to account for bullet drop and make precise adjustments.
4. Long Range Precision: While the AR-15 platform is not typically associated with extreme long-range precision shooting, it is possible to engage targets at distances beyond 600 yards (548 meters) with the right setup and skilled marksmanship. This often involves specialized AR-15 variants, longer barrels, enhanced ammunition, and high-magnification scopes (e.g., 6-24x, 8-32x). Additionally, factors like wind estimation, ballistic calculations, and consistent shooting techniques become crucial at these extended distances.
It’s important to note that these shooting distances are general guidelines, and actual shooting capabilities can vary depending on individual skill, rifle setup, and external factors. It’s always recommended to practice regularly, understand the ballistics of your ammunition, and gradually extend your shooting capabilities while prioritizing safety and responsible firearm handling.

lens at the front of the scope is responsible for gathering light into the
scope. The larger diameter leads to a larger exit pupil with a brighter image
for the shooter. Most objective lens diameter for a rifle scope range from 30 to 50mm.
Can A High Magnification Scope Used For Close Range
It’s not recommended to use a high magnification scope for close range shooting. For
an AR platform, a red dot sight is better for short range shooting.
